Mayor of Mansfield Tony Egginton raised the Commonwealth flag at Mansfield Civic Centre as part of a national celebration of Commonwealth Day this week.

On behalf of Mansfield District Council, Mayor Egginton read the Affirmation of the Commonwealth on Monday, while the council’s managing director Ruth Marlow read the response and Mrs Swan Parente, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, read the Queen’s message.

The flag flew for the remainder of the day and was brought down at dusk.

An estimated 500 flags were raised throughout the UK. As well as flying the flag at major public buildings, charity teams representing Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes, Walking with the Wounded and Fields of Life planned to mark the day by taking Commonwealth Flags to the top of the UK’s four highest peaks to raise funds.
