A 12-YEAR-OLD Mansfield boy is planning a two-mile sponsored swim to raise cash for a cancer charity in memory of his next door neighbour.
Daniel Haslam (12), of Armstrong Road, who swims for Mansfield Swimming Club, will swim two miles to raise money in memory of his neighbour Kathleen Reynolds (72), who recently died from cancer.
He is hoping to raise more than £300 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and his dad Selwyn says his son is a natural in the water.
“He loves his swimming and is a water baby at heart, two miles will not be a problem for him, he has done it before but he wants to do a personal best time,” he said.
“He was close to Kathleen and her husband Bob will be watching him swim, Daniel has always wanted to do a sponsored swim and this is a great opportunity.
“He has been swimming since he was five years old and loves being in the water.
“I could not wish for a more doting son, if he has something in mind he carries it through.”
Kathleen’s husband Bob added: “I’m very proud of Daniel, we are next door neighbours so we know him well and he is always very respectful. ”
Daniel’s swim takes place at Water Meadows Swimming Centre at 7pm on 7th August.
