A FOSTERING organisation is calling on Nottinghamshire couples and families to explore the benefits and challenges of foster care through a series of open days.

Sheffield-based Team Fostering, which provides care for children and young people across Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, has organised two events to provide information to anyone considering becoming a foster carer.

Experts from Team Fostering will be joined by current foster carers at Mansfield Civic Centre on June 21 and Worksop Crossing Gate Centre on June 29 between 9.30pm and 12.30pm.

Team Fostering is a not-for-profit organisation which has worked alongside local authorities to find suitable foster care for young people for the past 10 years and now supports 58 sets of carers from its Sheffield branch alone.

As well as training foster carers it provides a 24-hour support programme, regular supervision, educational support, activities in school holidays and an annual holiday for carers and young people.

Anyone who is interested and who feels they could give a child or young person a caring, safe, secure and stable home environment is urged to attend the events.

Team Fostering is looking for people aged over 25 who have a spare bedroom and could offer a child understanding, guidance and support. In the case of couples, one person must be available to care on a full time basis

Foster carers must enjoy looking after children and young people and be able to provide them with a nurturing family environment where they will be valued and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

Team Fostering Director Rosy Holden said: “Fostering a child can be very demanding but it can also be extremely rewarding.

“There are as many types of foster carer as there are children to care for but a lot of people who would be excellent often shy away from applying because they think they may not be what we’re looking for.

“Open days are a great way of encouraging those people to come forward. They can chat with foster carers about what it entails and we can give them information about the application process.”
