Mansfield all set for arts festival
THE stage is set for a celebration of the arts, as people prepare to showcase their talents in the Mansfield Arts Festival.
Packed with activities, exhibitions, performance, art and music, organisers say the nine-day programme in July promises to be fun, educational and inspiring with something for everyone.
There is also photography, poetry, script writing, theatre, jazz and bluegrass, singing, a battle of the bands, bell ringing and acrobatics, as well as the prospect of an Italian food market.
Inspired by the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the festival sees Mansfield District Council, including its Palace Theatre and Museum, Mansfield Library, The Old Library, Vision West Notts, schools and community groups come together to create an exciting programme of activities and events for everyone across the district to get involved in. The festival aims to celebrate the best of Mansfield through a range of performances, music and art.
The Palace Theatre is contributing to the overall festival with Project 2012: Mamesfelde to Mansfield, which is part-funded by an Arts Council / National Lottery grant and local businesses and community sponsorship.
The final part of the project is a series of seven short plays called ‘Not Much Matches Mansfield’ by Kevin Fegan. Since January, stories and views of people living and working in Mansfield and its surrounding areas have been gathered and play an influential part in this community play.
Each play lasts about 20 minutes and will be performed at various venues in the town centre on Saturday 14th July and Sunday 15th July. For more information please contact Christopher Neil, education manager on cneil@mansfield.gov.uk or on 01623 412 921.
Portfolio holder for economic regeneration, Cllr Kate Allsop said: “It is fantastic to see so many people committed to this festival, which offers a taste of Mansfield’s cultural life.
“There really is something here for everyone to see or get involved in. It is a great opportunity for people to share in the artistic talents of their community.”
It is hoped the Mansfield Arts Festival, which will run from 7th to 15th July, will become an annual event for Mansfield District Council.
