What made Chad headlines back in January 1989...

Interest rates: Mortgage payers were facing a miserable New Year as interest rates continued to soar.

Those affected were to be those people who took out loans which were subject to an annual review, with 1988’s rate of 10.3 per cent set to rise to a possible 13.5 per cent. Experts said the full fallout of the rise would be felt by the summer.

Stub out: Trent Buses said they were taking a ‘hard line with health’ by banning smoking altogether on their bus services.

Under the banner ‘Make Travel a Fresh Experience’ bosses said they hoped passengers would co-operate, but said they’d spent months researching what passengers wanted, and a ban on smoking was high on the list.
