Loco restored at Midland Railway - Butterley

A well used locomotive has been restored to full working order at the Midland Railway – Butterley. The 28 ton locomotive was built by the Yorkshire Engine Company in 1960 for British Railways as one of the class 02 diesel shunters and it was used around the Manchester and Liverpool areas for nine years.

Following withdrawal it went into industrial service working for the Hutchinson Estate and Dock Company before going on to Fison Fertilisers, Lowton Metals and finally Butterley Engineering.

It then made the short move to the Midland Railway – Butterley in 2002. Its long and busy life had taken its toll on the locomotive and a lot of work was needed to bring it back into service.

This was completed earlier this year and now that it has also been externally restored it can be seen on a variety of duties at the Midland Railway – Butterley.

The next stage in its restoration is to rebuild its vacuum brakes so that it can be used to haul passenger trains.

Alan Calladine the Midland Railway Trust Development Officer said: “It is great to see this locomotive back in use. It is already proving very useful and is often seen moving the steam locomotives around the Swanwick Junction museum Complex. We are hoping that it will be able to haul passengers on special occasions once the train braking system can be restored.”
