Youth Mayor greets international military officials

THE Youth Mayor of Mansfield has welcomed a group of international military strategists to the town.

The group of high-ranking British and international military officials paid a visit to Mansfield Civic Centre, Mansfield, last Wednesday as part of their work at the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS).

They were welcomed by the Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton before youth mayor Jessica Wells and youth ambassador Lucy Fretwell spoke about their roles.

Students from Samworth Church Academy, Queen Elizabeth’s Academy, Manor Academy and Vision West Nottinghamshire College spoke to the military officials about their future ambitions and opportunities, as well as the barriers they face.

They also talked about topics such as apprenticeships, education, health and wellbeing and their social life and hobbies.

Berni Dickinson, director of the Mansfield Learning Partnership, shared information on how the partnership is working to improve the personal development of students.

Jessica said: “I was honoured to welcome such prestigious visitors to Mansfield and to give them an insight into the role of Youth Mayor. I hope that by introducing them to some of the young people in the District, who have shared their experiences, we’ve been able to increase their knowledge of some of the issues we face.”

The group included members from Nigeria, Kuwait, Uganda, Estonia, The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and Great Britain. During their week-long tour of the East Midlands, they will be focusing on the region’s political, social, economic and cultural aspects, as well as local governance and youth.
