Warning over bogus brown bin callers

RESIDENTS are being urged not to disclose any personal information to bogus callers ringing about Mansfield District Council’s Garden Waste Collection Service.

An pensioner contacted the council after receiving a phone call on 7th March from someone asking for his bank details to pay for his brown bin.

The caller claimed to be working for Mansfield District Council but failed to give their name. The resident had already paid for the service and declined to provide his bank details.

In February, Mansfield District Council sent letters to existing brown bin customers with details of how to sign up for next year’s service (1st April 2013 to 31st March 2014).

Leaflets will be sent to all homes, alongside the Council Tax bill, later this month. The District Council is NOT telephoning customers for payment for this service.

Coun Phil Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We urge residents to be on their guard against this scam and never disclose bank details to anyone saying they are from the Council because the caller won’t have any connection with us.

“If you think you have been the victim of a similar scam or attempted scam, you can report it to Mansfield District Council by calling 01623 463 463 or Nottinghamshire Police on 101.”

For just £25 a year you will get a brown bin and an all year round garden waste collection every two weeks from March to November and monthly from December to February.

Residents can join the service by:

Calling 01623 463 463 to pay by credit or debit card.

Calling into the Civic Centre and paying at cashiers by credit or debit card or cash.

Sending the tear-off slip on your leaflet with your name, address and contact details and a cheque to Mansfield District Council, Hermitage Lane Depot, Maunside, Mansfield, Notts, NG18 5GU.

Once you have paid you will receive a sticker and a letter detailing where you need to place the sticker on your bin.
