VIDEO: Remembrance Sunday parade in Mansfield
Mansfield fell silent at 11am on Sunday to remember those who have given their lives fighting in conflicts across the world.
Servicemen and women, past and present, were joined by dignitaries, young cadets and the Mansfield public to lay wreaths at the civic centre war memorial.
This was followed by a parade through Mansfield town centre to St Peter’s Church where Revd David Fudger lead a poignant service.
Two minutes silence was observed inside and outside the church at 11am to mark the end of the First World War.
But Revd Fudger also paid tribute to those who have lost their lives fighting in the 94 years since.
He said: “It was a war which had began with people thinking it would end by Christmas, it became one of the bloodiest conflicts the world has ever seen.
“The peace at the end of that war brought hope to the world.
“We all know millions of lives have been lost and the world would never be the same again.
“But those who remained rebuilt their lives. The Royal British Legion was formed in order to help those returning from war.
“If you have been watching Downton Abbey you will know the program showed how those coming home struggled to settle into civilian life in a different world to the one they left in 1914.”
Revd Fudger spoke of the difficult situation faced by re-elected American President Barack Obama with ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Syria.
He added: “During the election campaign blue cards were held up which said ‘forward’ - moving forward. That’s what he intends to do with the American nation - there is much to work on.
“May we go forward in faith to face the future in what ever that may hold. We should try and come to a time when hostility will be no more.”
Mansfield Mayor Tony Egginton said a short prayer and hymns were sung as the congregation made their way out of the church.
