OLYMPIC swimming star Rebecca Adlington has officially opened a Mansfield school’s newly-refurbished library.
The Olympic gold and bronze medal-winner cut the ribbon at Oak Tree Primary School’s library on Thursday (21st March), which was followed by her reading a specially-selected story to the pupils from the new storyteller’s chair.
The library, which has a theme of Enchanted Woodland, has been given a makeover thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Foyle Foundation – an independent grant-making trust which has a focus on supporting school libraries in areas of deprivation.
The school, on Jubilee Way North, has received a number of donations through working with local businesses and organisations to make it a community project, including a cash donation of £250 from Mansfield District Councillor Vaughan Hopewell.
Carpentry and joinery students at West Nottinghamshire College have created wooden storage boxes for books and have crafted a door frame to fit in with the theme of enchanted woodland.
Meanwhile art and design students have produced artwork for the walls.
Headteacher Sarah Moore said: “As a new head to the school, it’s amazing to be part of this project and to welcome Mansfield’s very own sports star, Rebecca Adlington, to the launch.
“I’m so proud of the refurbishment and look forward future developments of the library. It will certainly help improve the literacy standards throughout school by developing a sense of awe and wonder around reading and writing at Oak Tree Primary.”
