VIDEO: New heritage trails unveiled in Mansfield Woodhouse
TWO new heritage trails featuring a number of historical sites have been unveiled in Mansfield Woodhouse.
The heritage trials show a wide variety of wildlife, from bee orchids at Oxclose Wood to farmland birds among the agricultural land as well as aquatic species including dragonflies and damselflies at Span Ponds.
The trails have been funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme with support and guidance provided from Mansfield Woodhouse Society.
Coun Joyce Bosnjak, who supported the LIS application, said the trails would be an opportunity for local people and visitors to walk in beautiful countryside whilst learning about the history of the local area.
She added: “I’m delighted to support such a wonderful project which really highlights the rich conservation and heritage of Mansfield Woodhouse and surrounding villages.
“These trails have such treasures as Whinny Hill, Spa Ponds, a roman villa near Northfield and the village of Radmanthwaite.
“I really hope they will attract both families from the local area and visitors from further a field.”
The first six mile trail includes Whinny Hill, a site that dates back to the Iron Age.
Another feature is Spa Ponds which used to be advertised as a natural cure for various ailments.
The second trail is four miles long and features the roman villa first discovered in 1786.
The villa is currently protected under law as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Copies of both trails are available for download from.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/lis.
