VIDEO: Mansfield school hits the right notes to reach choir final
A SCHOOL is tuning up for success after winning through to the final of a national choir competition.
St Peter’s Church of England School on Mansfield’s Bellamy Road have hit all the right notes and are due to appear at The Barbican in London next week as part of this year’s Barnado’s National Choir Competition.
The school was chosen as part of the final 12 from hundreds who entered across Britain. Schools were encouraged to record two pieces of music on a CD and send them to a panel of judges.
And for St Peter’s, their decision to record the choir performing ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ by Johnny Nash and ‘Amazing Grace’ paid off after being selected.
The school’s music teacher, Kim Denman, said: “We have a good strong music ethos, but we were still surprised because competition is quite stiff, especially in the south where a lot of the schools are private.
“We’re not expecting to win but it’s a fantastic opportunity to go to the capital city.
“We are really looking forward to it, we’re not that nervous, we’re just going to enjoy the experience.
“We hope to do well, the children work so hard and give up a lot of their free time.”
The Key stage two choir, which has 50 members, will travel to London on Monday morning, along with a second coach-load of parents. They will return on the same evening.
With the help of sponsorship from businessmen Matthew Harding, who runs King Fisher Lighting, and David Foster, along with Brunts School and local councillors Bob Cross and Martin Wright, they have been able to afford new uniforms for the concert and help pay for the travel costs.
