TWO women from Ashfield have been honoured as ‘unsung heroes’ during a special ceremony organised by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Jane Brown from Jacksdale and Sharron Quinn from Kirkby were both recognised at the Community Celebration event at county hall on Saturday..

They were among 69 members of the public who had been nominated by councillors or council officers for their work in making a difference in their community, whether it be volunteering, fundraising or working with disabled, older people, children and victims of crime.

Jane was recognised for helping stroke survivors after suffering a stroke herself two years ago which initially left her with speech difficulties.

But she has overcome her own problems and now works as a volunteer for the Stroke Association in the Ashfield area, organising activities, fundraising and supporting stroke survivors and their families.

In the last few months she has also given other volunteers and healthcare professionals an insight into techniques and approaches for working with people with communication difficulties.

Meanwhile, Sharron has worked with countless unemployed people in her role as volunteer for the Kirkby and Mansfield Work Clubs.

She began as a volunteer after going to the club more than a year ago when she made redundant. She found work but was laid off again in February.

But she has continued to help out at the Kirkby club and the new one in Mansfield.

Coun Carol Pepper, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Every community in Nottinghamshire has many fantastic people making an outstanding contribution to the life and wellbeing of the places where they live. Drawn from different backgrounds and walks of life, what binds these people together is their willingness to put the needs of others first.”
