THE trust responsible for King’s Mill Hospital has updated council bosses on the start of three reviews to improve its performance.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust updated the Nottinghamshire Health Scrutiny Committee at a meeting this week.

The committee listened to a presentation from the trust’s new interim Chief Executive Eric Morton who explained that three reviews are to take place as a matter of urgency into the organisation’s quality, board and financial governance.

The trust has recently received an intervention from Monitor, the Independent Regulator for Foundation Trusts, relating to its failure to comply with its terms of authorisation.

The committee recommended that the trust should raise more public awareness on Newark Hospital remaining open and encourage people to use the facility.

It also urged the trust to consider category B admissions at Newark Hospital to avoid transfers to King’s Mill Hospital for people living in the Newark and Sherwood area where possible.

The trust agreed to update the committee on outcome of the three reviews at its meeting on 7th January next year.

Councillor Sue Saddington, chairman of the committee, said: “The trust recognises that it does not have a well worked out strategy for the future and this must be addressed.

“The committee was reassured by the presence of the interim Chief Executive Eric Morton at the meeting and felt that he displayed the proactive leadership that would effectively address the problems facing the trust.

“I also asked whether Newark Hospital would remain open and Eric Morton confirmed that the hospital will not close.

“We look forward to seeing if progress has been made by the trust in the early New Year for the benefit of its patients.”
