Traders crackdown on retail crime

BUSINESSES in Alfreton are being urged to sign up to an initiative aimed at preventing retail crime.

A ‘Shop Watch’ scheme is being set up in the town by police, Amber Valley Community Safety Partnership and Amber Valley Borough Council.

It comes after police recorded an increase in shoplifting reports in the Amber Valley area, with 277 between April and September compared to 245 during the same period in 2011.

Retailers will now be able to access an online database of people who have been caught shoplifting.

Those interested in taking part should contact the Alfreton Town Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
