Thumbs up for weight restriction consultation on road in Huthwaite

CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed plans for a consultation on whether weight restrictions should be placed on a Huthwaite road.

Nottinghamshire County Council has approved funding for a restriction on Chesterfield Road to reduce the amount of lorries in the area.

Eric Bone, who is chairman of the Huthwaite Community Action Group, says that lorries sometimes use the road as a shortcut to the motorway.

“There are no footpaths and as far as we’re concerned it’s very dangerous,” he said.

“At our open meetings we have urged people to get involved in the consultation and a lot of people have said it would be good if we had weight restrictions.”

The group’s vice-chairman Anna Wilson said that the nuisance lorries seemed to come from outside of the Ashfield area.

She said: “There are some lorries that use the road as a matter of course. Hopefully people will take part in the consultation and hopefully everyone will be happy.”

The news has also been welcomed by Fiona Asbury, who is county councillor for the area.

She said: “HGVs have been causing a problem and they (the residents) have been asking for this for such a long time. It’s fantastic that the council have said yes.”

Meanwhile, Kate Butler, who is improvements manager at the county council, said: “The initial consultation starts in April.

“It will include surveys of traffic movement in the area and contact with businesses and other organisations which may require HGV use to operate.

“Once the information from the initial consultation has been collated, a proposed scheme will be put together which will go out for full, formal consultation.

“The initial fact finding consultation will start in April and we aim to have the weight restriction in place within the next 12 months.”
