A TEENAGE DJ from Selston who has learning difficulties has been awarded for providing inspiration to youngsters in his community.

Eddie Lowe, of Royal Oak Drive, is a volunteer at Selston Base 16 Young People’s Centre.

He was nominated for The Nottinghamshire Outstanding Achievement Award 4Uth by youth worker Kate Pishdar. The 19-year-old has been named as the district winner for Ashfield and will now attend County Hall on 28th September to see who wins the overall award.

Kate said Eddie’s low confidence was once a barrier to socialising and taking part in activities, but his self-esteem has now increased.

Kate said: “Not only will Eddie participate in activities, but he also runs some positive activities with support from staff. Since last year, Eddie has volunteered at the youth club every night. He runs the DJ booth and teaches other young people DJ skills. Eddie is a fantastic role model and is popular with the young people, especially when he volunteers at the under 14 sessions.”

There have been 56 nominations from across the county which came from friends, family members, youth workers and other people who work in a range of voluntary, public sector and other organisations.

Coun Kay Cutts, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We’ve been hugely impressed by the quality of the nominations again this year and are delighted to announce the district winners across Nottinghamshire.

“Many of those nominated have made significant progress in their personal development, which is really heartening to see, including school pupils who selflessly give up their time to care for other family members and those who’ve excelled themselves in a sporting arena.”
