A fitness fanatic has turned to football to help him fulfil his ambition to complete 40 fundraising events in a year.

Energetic Martin Beresford set himself the target simply because he turns 40 this year.

He is busy raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the brain-tumour charity, Indee Rose Trust, two causes which have affected his friends.

And for challenge number 25 on Friday, the Sutton-born runner completed the 18-miles that divide Mansfield Town’s One Call Stadium and Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, a task he dispatched in two hours and 20 minutes.

Martin said: “I enjoyed it, but it was difficult coming up Hucknall Road because there’s a lot of hills, and after running 13 miles you do not want to face them!”

While for many it may seem like a tough endurance challenge, for government worker Martin it’s just another step in his overall plan to complete 40 challenges, many of which involve running, walking or cycling great distances across the globe.

So far he has hiked up to Machu Picchu in Peru, run the London Marathon, taken part in the infamous Tough Mudder, saddled up for the Great Notts Bike Ride and climbed the three Yorkshire Peaks among other half marathons and 10k runs.

Friday’s workout was to help him prepare for the upcoming Great North Run, and he will put himself through a list of similar upcoming events culminating in the Las Vegas Marathon in November, just before his birthday.

On top of that, he has organised a series of fun events to help him reach his 40-event target, and the £10,000 target he set himself.

“The final three months I something happening every weekend.

“There have been certain times when it’s been both mentally and physically arduous, but I’ve got the support of family and friends.

“We’re are approaching £7,000 so it’s difficult to say if we’ll reach the target but it will be a big push for the last three months, and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.”
