Sutton Rambling Club to start winter programme with White Peak walk

On Sunday (14th October) the Sutton Rambling Club start their fortnightly winter programme with an 11 mile ramble on the south-east margins of the White Peak.

The circular route takes in a variety of scenery and the Cromford Canal. There will be a number of breaks during the day with the main lunch stop in the village of Cromford.

The ramble starts in Ambergate near the Hurt Arms and heads north through Shining Cliff Wood gradually veering north-west across to Alderwasley Park.

The route continues north onto Cromford Moor via Lane End and then westwards to a feature of the walk namely Black Rocks,These gritstone outcrops provide a variety of fascinating shapes and are a very popular area for proficient climbers. Having enjoyed this scenery we drop down into the village of Cromford where a choice of lunchtime refreshments will be available, This is where Arkwright established the first cotton mill in 1771.

The group then moves across to the Cromford Canal and have a steady walk south east along the towpath.

The canal was completed soon after 1790 providing an important outlet from the Derwent Valley to the River Trent.

Eventually the group leave the canal and cut across to the village of Fritchley and down to Bullbridge returning back to our starting point in Ambergate. The coach will depart for home between 5pm and 6pm.

As always we are very pleased to welcome new members who can look forward to a day of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company.

The McEwens coach leaves the Staff of Life pub on Hack Lane in Sutton at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate(near the Asda supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pick up points en route. The coach fare is £9, accompanied juniors free. There is no necessity to prebook your seat on the coach.
