David John Wood, 37, of Langford Street, admitted failing to provide a specimen at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court after he was arrested on February 12.

The court heard Wood lost control of his car and swerved into a wall, before bouncing across Kirkby Road to hit a parked car.

Ruth Snoddin, prosecuting, said: “He was seen to leave the area. Half an hour later he phoned the police to tell them his car had been stolen.

“Twenty minutes later he was located on Market Street, but refused to give a breath test and was arrested.

“In interview he said he wasn’t driving the car and had been sitting in the back. He said that a bloke was driving the car during a test drive.

“He was asked if the man had insurance but said he didn’t know.”

The court heard Wood had no previous convictions, but had been suffering from depression brought about by difficult family circumstances.

He was banned for 17 months, fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
