Sri Lanka trip for Tibshelf Community School students

STUDENTS from Tibshelf Community School will always remember the summer they spent helping out at their link schools in Sri Lanka.

The pupils, along with their teachers, have recently returned from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the schools near Galle in southern Sri Lanka where they helped build two English activity rooms.

After a week of settling into their new surroundings, the team spent two weeks at Thotagoda secondary school and Ihalogoda primary school where they built the new rooms and created an outside mural.

The pupils, who woke up at 5.45am each day to work on the project, were involved with all aspects of the project, from purchasing materials and providing labour to budgeting.

The classrooms were specially designed to help children learn English effectively and Tibshelf students also designed board games and books to boost learning.

Meanwhile, the visiting students also got the opportunity to find out about life in Sri Lanka by meeting their pen pals and visiting the fishing and tea villages.

This is the third time students from Tibshelf have visited Sri Lanka.

Sue Allen, who is head of PSHE and citizenship at the school, said: “Project Sri Lanka 2012 was our most successful Global Citizenship project to date.

“Pupils immersed themselves in Sri Lanka’s culture and way of life. T

Their first hand experience of what life is really like for those living in tea plantations and fishing villages was particularly rewarding. The building of the English activity rooms and murals provided a lasting legacy which were truly appreciated by our link schools.”
