Silver lining for Pleasley church after burglary

editorial image

A PLEASLEY church was dealt a blow when callous burglars stole their safe but priceless records have been returned in ‘miraculous’ circumstances.

Thieves caused hundreds of pounds of damage when they broke into St Barnabas Church, on Church Street, Pleasley Hill.

A metal safe containing cash, silver and historical church records were all taken.

The records were dumped in a bin ‘miles’ away from the church but found by a man who used to live in Pleasley about 15 years ago whose sister got married at the church.

Warden Heather Morton said: “God moves in mysterious ways.

“It was only a small amount of money taken but it was a lot to us.

“The damage which has been caused will probably cost more than what was taken.

“But the records were priceless to us - they were the history of the church.

“It’s good news we have got them back in very fortunate circumstances. But it wasn’t very nice to target a church.”

Ms Morton paid special thanks to the man who found the records and a dog walker who reported the burglary on the morning of Monday 11th February.

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw the 1.5ft by 2.5ft safe being taken or anyone who may have been offered the silver for sale.

Witnesses should call police on 101 quoting 58/11022013.
