Shirebrook teenager damaged car, Chesterfield magistrates told

A boozy Shirebrook teenager damaged a car because he believed that the owner had mistreated his sister, a court was told.

Brad Ward (19) smashed the Fiat Brava’s windscreen after trying to slash its tyres on 31st August.

Police were called by witnesses and he admitted being responsible for the damage to the parked vehicle.

Chesterfield magistrates heard that he was with friends at the time of the offence and he could not be identified as the person with the knife.

“It is to his credit that he didn’t prevaricate with police and told them what had happened,” said Ward’s solicitor, Julie Page.

She told the court he drank heavily while out with pals and later spotted the car as he walked along Division Road, Shirebrook.

“He tried to slash the tyres with a knife carried by a friend who produced it. It was described as a standard small kitchen knife and the blade soon bent.

“He put it down and then broke the windscreen. The complainant had been in a relationship with his sister who says she had been treated badly.

“No doubt the combination of alcohol and his ill-feeling towards the complainant led to him acting uncharacteristically, but it doesn’t justify his behaviour,” added Ms Page.

Ward, a factory worker, of Recreation Drive, Shirebrook, admitted possessing a blade in public and damaging a vehicle. He had no previous convictions.

The justices adjourned sentence until 24th September for probation service reports.
