Shirebrook motorist caught behind wheel said he didn’t know he was banned
A man caught driving while banned after he left work at Shirebrook claimed he did not know he was disqualified.
Marcin Skwarek, who had never passed a driving test, was banned for 15 months in July for a drink-driving offence.
Police saw him drive away from Sports Direct and followed him for two miles before stopping his Audi A4, Chesterfield magistrates were told.
“He said he was unaware he was disqualified and he had insurance, although he had no papers to prove that,” said Becky Mahon, prosecuting.
Skwarek (31), of York Road, Shirebrook, admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance on 1st October.
Sentence was adjourned until Friday for probation service reports. His solicitor, Kevin Tomlinson, asked the bench to suspend any term of custody they might impose.
“Police were in an unmarked vehicle parked outside Sports Direct warehouse when he drove away,” said Mr Tomlinson.
“He is Polish and he has been in this country for 12 months. He obtained employment at Sports Direct two days after arriving here.
“Other Polish nationals living in Shirebrook also work there and he came here specifically to work.”
