Shirebrook burglar caught after police chase

A Shirebrook man facing sentence for burglary may be given help with his drink problem.

Magistrates at Chesterfield heard that Mark Roberts (41) was a chronic alcoholic who injected alcohol into his body.

He and Peter Williams had admitted stealing £500 worth of power tools from a garden shed in Slant Lane, Shirebrook, on 28th September.

A witness saw them pulling a wheelie-bin up the road after they set off a garden sensor light at 2.30am.

Police were called and Roberts jumped through a hedge when officers arrived but he was caught after a chase.

Williams was found hiding in a garden with the bin containing the stolen tools nearby.

Roberts was granted bail last Thursday on condition he abided by a 7pm-7m curfew at an address in Station Road.

But, when Group 4 security staff attended the address on Friday night to fit monitoring equipment, they got no reply and Roberts did not answer his mobile phone.

“Police were informed and they called him yesterday and asked where he was. He gave his parents’ address and he was arrested there,” Becky Mahon, prosecuting, told the hearing on Monday.

Roberts, who was brought back to court in custody, told police he had not breached the curfew, saying: “I’ve been up to Langwith Road every night.”

His solicitor, Denney Lau, said he had mixed up the street names and house numbers of the addresses where his sister and his parents lived.

“Unfortunately, he gave the wrong address to the court,” added Mr Lau.

Roberts was granted bail subject to the curfew in Langwith Road . He will be sentenced on 1st November after being assessed for a possible alcohol treatment programme.

Williams (27), of Pear Tree Drive, Shirebrook, is due to sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Friday. He was already serving a suspended jail term for house burglary and he has been remanded in custody.
