School goes green with solar panels

A SUTTON school is set to enhance its green credentials with the installation of new £20,000 solar panels.

Quarrydale School is among the first UK schools selected to receive a grant from the Co-op's Green Energy for Schools scheme, which also gained match funding from the Government's Low Carbon Building Programme.

Leading solar energy company Solarcentury will now install the panels to generate renewable electricity and reduce the school's reliance on electricity from fossil fuels.

A monitor screen in the school building will display how much energy the panels are generating and how much carbon dioxide they have saved.

And the school will also be able to access energy data online, along with educational materials which teachers can download for use in the classroom.

Headteacher Craig Weaver told Chad: "It is fantastic to be among the schools chosen to receive free solar panels through this initiative.

"As a specialist science college we recognise we have a vital role to play in educating the next generation about climate change and using this renewable energy technology to power our own premises will help us to bring that message home to pupils, parents and staff."

And Co-op spokesman Liz Moorhouse, who nominated the school, added: "As well as cutting carbon dioxide emissions and saving the school money on electricity bills, the solar panels will serve as a reminder to the whole community of the urgent need to do what we can to tackle climate change."
