A safety inspection will determine how long a sports centre will remain closed after its doors were shut without warning on Friday.

Mansfield District Council released a statement on Friday to say Meden Sports Centre was to close ‘with immediate effect’ due to fire safety issues that need addressing.

The news was so sudden that even staff members were not informed.

But Mansfield district and Warsop parish councillor, Phil Shields said the decision was taken as soon as the problem was identified.

Coun Shields said: “It’s impossible to say how long it will be closed until we the investigation carried out.

“I want it repairing as soon as possible. It’s in everybody’s interest to get this re-opened as soon as we can, but until we know what we are dealing with, we just don’t know.

“It came about because of planned, ongoing repair and maintenance work.

“As soon as it came to light I asked for it to be closed.”

David Allsop, who has run the karate school for 22 years, contacted Chad because he failed to get a response from the centre, or the council.

“I was not told about it being closed until Saturday morning, and that was from a fellow worker,” he said.

“It has come as quite a shock, I’m just trying to find another place to take the karate club now.”

The council said it was looking at alternative options for those who use the facilities at the Burns Lane site, which includes a 20-metre swimming pool, two gyms, sports hall and fitness studio.

Other council-run leisure facilities are available, including the Rebecca Adlington Centre and Oak Tree Leisure Centre.

The sudden closure triggered a political reaction from Mansfield Labour Group leader, Coun Martin Lee, who blames mayor Tony Egginton and his cabinet for the closure.

He said: “It raises serious questions about how this has been allowed to happen,” asking if it was an attempt to close it ‘by stealth’.

But this was dismissed out of hand by Coun Shields who said: “It’s ridiculous to even consider it. I made the decision to open it when it was closed a few a years ago, why would I want it closed now?”
