Run-down estate in Warsop to be renovated
A COUNCIL scheme to regenerate a run-down estate has been launched with £500,000 being ploughed into five recently-bought homes already.
Mansfield District Council bought the properties on Fenwick Street, Vickers Street and Watson Street on Warsop’s Mount Pleasant estate with the aim of renovating and putting them back on the market.
Up to £40,000 was spent buying each property, with hopes it could spark a major improvement for the area.
Many houses remain boarded up while many backyards have become a tipping ground.
Coun Derek Evans, who is portfolio holder for housing strategy and regeneration, said: “This is only the start, we want to generate the whole immediate area, and long term we want to generate a better street scene but a lot of work needs doing.
“Some landlords are good, and the houses look great, but there are some which are not so good.
“We want to encourage private landlords to refurbish their properties, and if they don’t we should look at the possibility of taking them over.
“But we need the residents on board, because without their help and support we can do nothing. We need them onside to improve the lives of everyone in this area.”
A meeting is planned for residents of Mount Pleasant estate on 1st November from 6pm to 8pm at Longden Terrace Welfare to discuss the issue.
