Residents pledge £6,500 for legal fight over Lindhurst development
RESIDENTS looking to fight plans to build 1,700 homes on the outskirts of Mansfield have pledged over £6,500 for a legal challenge.
A meeting at Mansfield Rugby Club last week attracted nearly 100 people who are opposed to the Lindhurst development on land off the A617 Marr Road.
An initial meeting, which took place during heavy snowfall last month, saw about 30 people pledge £3,000 to the cause.
But an event on Thursday had an ‘enthusiastic’ response with more people vowing to put their hands in their pockets.
Coun Stephen Garner, who is leading the campaign, believes they now have enough support to set up a committee.
The Lindhurst development, between Southwell Road West and Nottingham Road, could create thousands of jobs, new businesses, schools and doctors surgeries.
But campaigners believe the environmental impact of the scheme will kill off local wildlife and the green views once enjoyed from their homes will be lost.
In July 2011, Mansfield District Council reached a resolution to grant planning permission, subject to a Section 106 agreement being signed.
Coun Garner claims the district council were not fully informed about Natural England’s concerns about the scheme and should call it back in.
If they decide not to, about £20,000 will be needed for a legal challenge.
Coun Garner said: “We are now trying to get a committee set up to carry it on. It’s too much for one man.
“It’s a good response so far but we need continue to get out there and promote it.
“Everyone who has come to the meeting has been enthused by it but we need to keep things moving forward.”
Nottinghamshire County Council has already given authority to officers to draw up the section 106 agreements. After this is sent out campaigners have 13 weeks to prepare their legal challenge.
