SOME rare examples of the highly sought-after Pinxton porcelain is set to go on sale at a Nottingham-based auction house next week.
The pottery formed part of the collection of the late Mr and Mrs Percy Dennis and the items will be sold by Mellors & Kirk, an auction house specialising in fine art.
Auctioneer Nigel Kirk said: “Although a small factory, Pinxton produced some superb porcelain as well as tea ware in a more restrained style of decoration. Mr and Mrs Dennis were collecting 50 years ago and had a great eye for quality.
“It would be splendid if at least some of this collection stayed in the local area, but there is already great interest in this sale.”
The collection includes several pieces featuring canary yellow which was a notoriously difficult colour to fire and only successfully produced at a few European factories.
Many of the items were exhibited at Mansfield Museum in 1999 and three years earlier they appeared at Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
Pinxton porcelain is scarce because the factory only existed from 1796 until 1813.
It was created by William Billingsley (1758-1828) who was one of the most important figures in the history of English porcelain. The most prized pieces were made before Billingsley left in 1801.
There will be a viewing at the auction house from Sunday and the sale is on 20th September. There is also online bidding.
