Rainworth man jailed for kicking preganant girlfriend in the stomach

A MAN who repeatedly kicked and punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach during a sustained attack was jailed for 23 weeks.

Ryan Liam Clarke, of The Fields, Rainworth turned violent after an argument with his partner when he accused her of sleeping with another man because of messages left on Facebook.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court heard how the 25-year-old had drunk seven pints of lager and the argument had festered all night on 22nd June.

It then turned violent at her home in Forest Town after he grabbed her by the hair and ear and punched her several times to the head. She fled into the street but was pursued by Clarke who dragged her back inside, punching her again before dragging her to floor and kicking her in the abdomen.

Once again she was able to escape and called 999. Clarke followed her shouting at her and attacking her again.

She was eventually able to bite his thumb to stop the attack, just before the police turned up.

She suffered a swollen nose and head, a loose front tooth and pain in her back.

He had initially denied the charge of assault by beating but had changed his plea to guilty on the day of his trial.

Defending, Melanie Hoffman, said her client had little recollection of the evening but accepted his behaviour was “disgraceful”.

She said the couple had since reconciled and were preparing for the birth of their child in November.

Clarke had stopped drinking and they had been meeting social services in an effort to sort their problems.

But the magistrates described it as one of the worst cases of domestic violence they had seen, before jailing him.

Led away in handcuffs, he blew a kiss to his girlfriend who cried in the public gallery.
