QE’s rises out of special measures
Queen Elizabeth’s Academy is no longer in Special Measures following a glowing report from its latest Ofsted inspection.
It represents a remarkable turnaround for Mansfield’s oldest education establishment, which became an Academy at the start of this year and has made excellent progress in turning around its fortunes.
Said Academy principal Mike Smith: “We are extremely encouraged by the report and although there’s still much to be done, it clearly suggests that we are on the right lines.
“I’m delighted at the way staff and students have responded to the opportunity to make a fresh start and they deserve enormous credit.”
The report highlights that the behaviour of students has ‘improved a great deal’. It states: “There is a calm atmosphere in the vast majority of lessons and teachers’ skills in maintaining good behaviour have improved.
“Behaviour is good around the school and the principal and his senior team are visible at lunchtime and between lessons. The number of fixed-term exclusions has fallen sharply and attendance has improved.
“The Academy has made particularly good progress since the new principal took up his post in April. Senior and middle leaders and staff share a good awareness of what needs to be done and understand the expectations on them to achieve the required improvement.”
QE Academy, which now has specialist status in English and in business and enterprise, has broadened its curriculum since September and plans are place to further increase the range of subjects on offer to students.
John Carter, chairman of governors and the QE Trust said: “Last year we celebrated 450 years of Queen Elizabeth’s history and achievements. This year, we celebrate Ofsted’s endorsement of the hard-work in getting the school back on track after a few difficult years.”
“However, we are not complacent. We are determined to provide the best educational opportunities for our student and parent community. Ofsted’s report clearly confirms we are on that journey.”
