Prison for Warsop youth after attack on dog
A YOUNG man who pushed an umbrella into a dog’s throat during a ‘sustained’ attack was sentenced to four months in prison yesterday.
Mansfield magistrates heard last month how James Pogmore of Meden Avenue, Warsop, had also stabbed the umbrella into the back of the terrified five-year-old springer spaniel’s head, and pinned it to the floor with a walking stick.
As he sentenced Pogmore the Mansfield magistrate said: “This was an appalling attack on a defenceless animal. It is one of the worst ones I have seen in 26 years on the bench.”
The 20-year-old admitted a charge of unnecessary cruelty during a hearing at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court.
David Payne, prosecuting, told the court how Pogmore had attacked the female dog, named Ruby, on 20th April while alone in the house on Fell Wilson Street, Warsop, after his former girlfriend had gone on a driving lesson.
When she returned she had found the dog to have suffered a swollen bloodshot eye, bruising around the head, a cut to the back of the head and bleeding from a cut at the back of he throat, caused by the umbrella.
Following veterinary attention, the dog returned home to her owner, who has since broken off her relationship with Mr Pogmore.
Emma Goodall, mitigating, said Pogmore fully accepted he lost his temper and gone way over the top.
She told the court he was a full-time carer for his mother and had admitted having anger management issues.
He was also disqualified by from keeping animals for the maximum of 15 years.
