Police campaign to cut thefts from sheds in Shirebrook
NEWS: News.
POLICE in Shirebrook have been visiting local residents to fit shed alarms and help raise awareness of safety and security.
The campaign has been set up with the support of the Bolsover Community Safety Partnership to help prevent and reduce shed burglaries in the area.
Since the start of January there have been a total of 10 incidents where shed or outbuildings have been targeted in Shirebrook.
The latest one took place sometime overnight between Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3. A hedge trimmer was stolen from the shed in the back garden of a house on Main Street.
As well as fitting a free shed alarm, the officers from the Shirebrook Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have handed out 100 crime prevention packs including property marking pens and information on reducing the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
Sergeant Matt Troth of the Shirebrook Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The aim behind the initiative is to help reduce the risk of sheds in the area becoming a target for thieves and helping local residents to protect any valuable items such as bikes, tool, sporting or electrical equipment.
“We have also increased patrols in the area to help deter thieves and offer reassurance to local residents.”
Coun Brian Murray-Carr, chairman of the Bolsover Community Safety Partnership, said: “This campaign is an excellent example of how partner agencies can work together to help prevent crime and keep our area safe.
“Sheds can be a vulnerable target and we hope that this initiative will help residents in Shirebrook to keep their valuables secure.”
