Poignant moment for cancer-free patient
Director Lis Lawrence at Care and Comfort Community Services for Macmillan coffee morning
A NATIONWIDE cancer fundraiser proved a poignant event for a Farnsfield woman after being given the all clear by doctors.
Thousands came together across Britain recently for the Macmillan Coffee Morning, to help rake in cash to support those affected by the deadly disease.
For Lis Lawrence it was a special moment after she was told she was completely clear of breast cancer days before.
The 56-year-old was diagnosed in June 2007 after two lumps had been found during a routine mammogram. She underwent a radical mastectomy just a few days later and 14 months of gruelling treatment.
She said: “You feel like you’ve had the rug pulled from underneath you, I didn’t have chance to get my breath. You never think it will happen to you.”
But following annual check-ups, she was told shortly before the Macmillan Coffee Morning she had organised at Care and Comfort Community Services - a charity she set up in 2006 - that she did not have to return.
“The feeling of relief when I walked out of hospital was incredible, I shed tears,” she said.
“People say you need to stay positive which I did, but it wasn’t easy- I think I was just focussed on Care and Comfort, it was my baby really!
“After leaving hospital I’d put on Facebook ‘Today is the start of the rest of my life’, which got about 40 likes on it!”
