THE team behind Mansfield’s Business Improvement District (BID) believe they have made ‘positive steps’ to re-generate the town.

We reported in Chad how some retailers felt short-changed with the scheme which has received almost £1m from businesses in the past three years.

The BID has now provided a numerous examples to show they are delivering on their 2009 manifesto.

A dedicated cleaning team helped the town to runners-up in the Love Where You Live, Keep Britain Tidy national award.

Retail crime was down 11 per cent, helped by BID’s ambassadors patrolling the town and two CCTV kits.

The ‘I Love Mansfield’ marketing campaign and over 3,400 privilege card holders have helped businesses promote themselves and increase revenue.

The team is working on installing electronic parking signage, improving town gateways and reducing parking fees.

A new mobile app is being created and a £10,000 grant to introduce free wi-fi has been secured.

BID manager Sarah Nelson said: “We have achieved some real positive steps forward with various initiatives and projects and have made some excellent differences to individual businesses.

“That is not to say there aren’t areas that we still need to be working hard on.

“We are here for every business in the town and we would encourage any of those businesses to engage with us.”

Steve Yemm, chair of the Mansfield Labour group, also arranged a meeting with the BID team and town centre retailers.

He said: “I had a productive meeting with the BID, although I remain concerned that they appear to be neither measuring against or delivering on their principal goals of improving footfall, visitor latency or business revenue in the town centre.”
