For many a lack of work experience can make all the difference in the quest for long-term employment.
Research has shown that unemployed people who take up work experience are 28 per cent more likely to move into employment.
So as part of its weekly feature on the Getting Ashfield and Mansfield Working Campaign Chad takes a closer look at the process.
Adam Fox (22), of Skegby, completed an eight week-placement at Ashfield District Council as part of the Waste and Environment Support Team.
He said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity to get experience and improve my career prospects. I have really enjoyed working with the team and using my expertise and knowledge to support them.
“Developing the databases was a part of the experience that I really enjoyed but found equally challenging. At times it was difficult to get the programmes working, but I relished this challenge and was always determined to get it working effectively.”
Adam, who graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2012 with a degree in BSc Mathematics, helped remodel the organisation’s systems and databases.
He made improvements to systems that initially took over an hour to update, but now only take a matter of seconds.
His work will be used by the team for a long time in the future.
Albert Wilson, lead development officer in the Waste and Environment Team helped organise the work experience.
He said: “Adam made a huge difference to the team by improving many of the systems we use.
“As a result of his hard work we have become more efficient and improved the service to our residents.”
The Getting Ashfield and Mansfield Working campaign was put together by Mansfield Area Strategic Partnership (MASP) to raise awareness of the support available for jobseekers in Ashfield and Mansfield.
Each week Chad has featured advice from partner members on everything from graduate employment to work experience and presentation skills.
