Petition to re-open murder case

A FORMER Mansfield student looking for closure after his mum was found dead in Crete says he has been forced to petition against the courts in order to bring her killers to justice.

Jean Hanlon (53) went missing on 9th March 2009 and three days later her body was recovered from the sea.

It left her son Michael Porter (27) determined to find answers.

Soon after Michael started to campaign in order to shed light on what happened, two men were named by police as murder suspects.

Despite treating the case as murder, Greek courts ruled there was not enough evidence to charge the two suspects and the case was left unsolved.

“When we were told the decision it felt like we were back at day one and it was a real blow because I wanted to get those responsible behind bars,” he said.

Michael, who now lives in London, stayed in the Mansfield area for five years while studying at the Expressions Academy of Performing Arts and urges people across Mansfield and Ashfield to sign the petition to re-open the case.

He said: “If I have the support of people across different countries it will be harder for the courts to turn us away because there’s more strength in numbers.”
