Peter Smith Retrial: Jury discharged for second time in Hilda Owen murder trial

THE jury in the retrial of a man accused of murdering a Skegby pensioner has been discharged for a second time.

Peter Kenneth Smith (48) is accused of killing 71-year-old Hilda Owen in her home in 2007. He denies the charges.

On Wednesday, a jury was sworn in at Nottingham Crown Court and the prosecution’s opening statements were read out.

But the jury was discharged at lunch time after one member said they were unable to sit due to ‘personal reasons’.

Yesterday (Thursday), a new jury was sworn in and the trial once again got underway with the prosecution’s opening statements being read out for a second time.

But this morning, the second jury was discharged and the case was adjourned until Monday.

The trial is expected to last up to eight weeks.
