A Notts woman, who does not wish to be named, said she bought a chilli-based slimming gel which made her skin burn and produced a rash.

She initially thought she would need to go to the hospital but after spending several hours under a cold shower the burning and rash eventually calmed down.

She then purchased some slimming tablets and, after taking them for a period of time, she began to suffer from dizziness, nausea, hot flushes, diarrhoea and dehydration.

She sought medical attention and was advised to stop taking the tablets.

The gel and pills were subsequently thrown away and the authorities are still trying to establish the traders who sold them.

Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, Community Safety Committee Chairman, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This case highlights the dangers of purchasing slimming products from anywhere other than reputable medical sources, such as a pharmacy.
