OLYMPIC MEMORIES: Mansfield girl brings back gold from Beijing

As Team GB bask in the glory of their first gold medal the Rio Olympics - we thought we'd take a trip down memory lane.

This time eight years ago, a certain golden-haired Mansfield girl became the first British woman to win a swimming gold in almost 50 years.

Becky Adlington, who attended Brunts Academy, ended up winning both the 400 and 800 metre freestyle events, becoming the first British swimmer to win more than one gold at a single Olympics in a hundred years.

At the time, Becky’s dad Steve told the Chad: “It is mind boggling what she has achieved. To me she is my little girl, but to everyone else a superstar.

People are coming up to me in the street to say well done and it is really amazing.”

After Beijing, Becky on to win a bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and is now commentating for BBC television at this year’s Rio Olympics.
