Nottinghamshire County Council welcomes tax freeze pledge

Government plans to compensate councils which freeze their Council Tax have been welcomed by Nottinghamshire County Council.

The Government has indicated this week that it will provide grants equivalent to a one per cent increase in Council Tax to local authorities that do not increase bills for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 financial years.

For Nottinghamshire County Council this would mean a grant of approximately £3million per year.

Prior to today’s announcement, the County Council has previously indicated that it plans to put proposals to councillors which would see a freeze in Council Tax for a fourth successive year for 2013/14. However, any Government support would mean the County Council would not have to use its reserves to fund the freeze.

Coun Kay Cutts, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council said: “I am delighted that the Government has once again indicated that it will reward Councils that decide to freeze Council Tax for hard pressed local families.

“We are in a difficult economic climate and we recognise that many people are struggling with household bills, so it was always our intention to propose a Council Tax freeze once again for the forthcoming year.

“Finances are tight for the Council too, so Government support to implement the Council Tax freeze would mean that our reserves will be protected and can be used to further support our ambitious programme of measures to stimulate the local economy.

“However, one slight note of caution is that we are still yet to receive details about the Local Government grant settlement - the amount the Government provides to local Councils to provide services - for 2013/14. The level of settlement will be critical in making a full assessment of the Council’s overall financial position going forward.”

Meanwhile, the County Council is making final preparations ahead of the launch of its Budget Consultation. The 12 week ‘Budget Conversation’ will be used to get the views of Nottinghamshire residents, businesses and other stakeholders on its full budget proposals for 2013/14, including the freeze in Council Tax.

From 5th November to 25th January 2013, people will be able to give the County Council their views in a variety of ways, including comment cards at local libraries, an online budget simulator, by phone and by post.

The full budget proposals will be discussed by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Finance and Property Committee on 12th November and will be considered again, alongside the results of the consultation on 13th February by Policy Committee. The final proposals from Policy Committee will then be debated at the Full Council meeting on 28th February.
