Nottinghamshire County Council welcomes improved help for dementia sufferers

Nottinghamshire County Council has welcomed the Government’s announcement to spend £50m improving care for dementia patients.

It is reported that the £50m will be used to help hospitals and care homes create more dementia-friendly environments to ensure a calming environment.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt made the announcement at the National Children’s and Adults’ Services Conference in Eastbourne.

The number of people with late onset dementia, which affects people over 65, is expected to double over the next ten years in Nottinghamshire.

Coun Kevin Rostance, Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “We look forward to seeing more detail on the proposals but it is good news that more funds are being directed at dementia care which is an increasing health issue in the UK.“Around 42 percent of care home residents who the County Council funds have dementia which is set to rise, so additional funding will help address this increase.”
