A NINETEEN-year-old-man who subjected a young Mansfield woman to brutal rape was jailed indefinitely today

Judge James Sampson described Jospeh Moran as a ‘pathalogical liar and a man without an ounce of remorse’ as he ordered him to serve six-and-a-half years minimum behind bars.

Moran was convicted by a jury in June of raping and wounding his 22-year-old victim after dragging her onto the Forest Recreation Ground, Nottimgham, in December last year.

She was from Mansfield and had been thrown off a bus near the park at 3am beacause she was 20 pence short of her £5 fare home.

A Nottingham Crown Court jury heard over the course of the trial how the young woman was grabbed from behind by Moran and dragged down a bank into the recreation ground while walking along Mansfield Road out of the city to be picked up ny her mother.

Said the Judge: “At 3.30am she arrived at a junction near the Forest. You emerged from the shadows of the park and dragged her into undergrowth. Mercifully she lost consciousness.

“You stripped her naked and battered her face so badly that even her mother could not recognise her.

“It was a sustained attack lasting at least 25 minutes. By a remarkable twist of fate you were disturbed by the flashing lights of a police car.”

It emerged during the trial that the police had stopped the girl’s mother’s car as it was traveling nearby very slowly.

The judge said Moran had approached the police car with ‘sinister calm’ and told them he had come accross an injured woman. He was covered in mud and had fresh blood streaked across his face and arms and was arrested at the scene.

“In the light of the savage nature of the offence and his previous conviction for causing actual bodily harm to a former girlfriend you pose a significant risk of serious harm to women,” said the judge.

He added: “You are to be sentenced for a brutal atrtack and horrific rape.”

Speaking about the bus driver’s refusal to allow the young woman on the bus Judge Sampson said: “But for want of a small act of kindness she was left isolated and vulnerable in the city.”

In a statement, the woman thanked those involved in bringing her attacker to justice.

She said: “First and foremost I would like to thank my family for their unwavering and unremitting support and prayers during what has been a very difficult time.

“I would also like to thank the staff at the Queen’s Medical Centre for the dedication, professionalism, care and consideration demonstrated by them during my week in hospital and in the weeks that followed on my return for further treatment.

“The police have not only worked extremely hard on this case, they have also offered a great deal of pastoral support and shown incredible sensitivity towards me - something that often goes unrecognised. For that I will always be grateful.

“I am now moving forward with my life and I ask that people respect that and allow me and my family to maintain our privacy.”

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Griffin, who was in charge of the investigation, said: “This case has attracted a lot of attention in the media, not just because of the brutality of Moran’s attack, but due to the circumstances leading up to the attack.

“Let me be clear, it is people like Joseph Moran who cause women all over the world to feel unsafe on the streets at night. He is a vile predator, who took advantage of his victim’s isolation and vulnerability, and in a single moment changed her life forever.

“To then audaciously claim that he was trying to help her, and then force her to endure a trial is beyond cruel.

“Joseph Moran is the only person responsible for what happened that night and he will now have time to think about his actions while he is behind bars.

“Despite her physical, mental and emotional scars, the young woman at the centre of this case has shown tremendous fortitude in not letting it ruin her life. She has forged on and looks forward to a very promising future.

“We have been humbled by her bravery and resilience and wish her only the very best from here on in.”
