Nine vehicles seized as police target road safety at Shirebrook

Police in Shirebrook have been targeting dangerous driving and poor vehicle maintenance as part of the multi-agency Operation Safedrive initiative.

Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team joined forces with CREST (Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team), roads policing unit VOSA vehicle examiners and HM Revenue and Customs to check vehicles at Weighbridge Road in the town.

Seven mini buses, two cars and a moped were taken off the road by officers after they were found to be on the road without insurance or licences.

Four motorists were stopped for not wearing their seatbelts and two drivers were pulled up for using their mobile phones.

Vehicle examiners from VOSA found three vehicles with defects which meant they were too dangerous to be on the road and issued immediate prohibition notices.

In addition, HM Revenue and Customs seized one vehicle after it was found to be running on untaxed, red diesel.

Safer Neighbourhood team Sgt Matt Troth said: “It is disappointing to see that so many people are not taking the safety of themselves or other road users seriously by driving illegally, not wearing a seatbelt or using their mobile phone behind the wheel.

“We hope this will encourage motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, legal and that they are driving safely, with care and consideration for others.”

Operation Safedrive is a countywide partnership campaign to improve road safety, reduce accidents and address community concerns.

Further checks are being planned across the area for the future.
