Newstead Abbey lead theft arrests

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of stealing £2,000-worth of lead from the roof of Newstead Abbey.

The man and woman, both aged 23, were arrested on Friday morning following the discovery of lead in the back garden of a house in Kirkby-and in a Vauxhall Vectra, which is believed to be from the Abbey.

The lead was stolen from the roof of the Grade I Listed building earlier this month.

During an assessment by police at a scrap yard in Mansfield, further lead from the Abbey was also located.

Police say they are continuing their enquiries and anyone with information about the thefts is still be asked to contact them on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
