COUNCIL chiefs have officially opened a new £900,000 young people’s centre in Sutton that has been created on the site of a former gym.

Nottinghamshire County Council leader Kay Cutts, chairman Carol Pepper and Coun Philip Owen, chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee, met some of the young people involved in the project when they came to officially open the facility on Friday.

The centre is on the Eastbourne Centre site on Station Road and provides a fantastic, bright and modern meeting place for young people.

The former school gym now features a coffee bar area, DJ booth and recording studio and pool table area.

Nottinghamshire County Council owns the site, and as well as the newly-refurbished hall, it includes offices and training rooms for Skills for Employment, a project which provides vital skills training to young people in skills such as joinery, painting and decorating, horticulture, construction and health and social care.

Coun Pepper unveiled a plaque to mark the building’s opening and Coun Cutts also gave a speech, praising what is the council’s 29th youth centre in Nottinghamshire.

Young people in the Sutton area have had a lot of input in the design of the new young people’s centres.

Sara Platt, young people’s services locality manager for Ashfield, said: “Young people have been keenly involved in designing aspects of the project, choosing the colours and ensuring that what we provide in the new centre meets their needs.”

On 15th April from 4pm-9pm there is a free open evening so that young people, parents and carers can visit the new facility.
