New £80,000 skate park rolls into Ravenshead
TEENAGERS and young people in the Ravenshead area have been making the most of a new £80,000 skatepark which opened this week.
The park in Longdale Lane has been jointly funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme (£50k) and the local parish council (£30k) and has been heralded as a much needed facility for the area.
A number of consultation sessions were set up between designers, county council project officers and more than 20 local young people to discuss what they wanted in their park.
The project, which took four months from design to completion, used an online gaming programme to test and modify the proposed design.
The bespoke design utilises the existing contours of the land and includes a spine mini ramp complex, step up jump, flat bank and quarter pipe set up and a concrete grind ledge.
Coun Chris Barnfather, who supported the application for funding, said the park was a massive boost for the area.
“Seeing the young people having such a fabulous time is what it’s all about,” said Coun Barnfather. “The skate park and the multi-use games areas next door will be used extensively by children and young people from the village and from other neighbouring areas.
“It is great for families in Ravenshead who can now be content that their children and out in the fresh air in a safe environment.”
“The foreman in charge of construction summed it up when he said a young boy told him he didn’t want anything for Christmas as he got his present the day the council agreed to build the skatepark.”
Parish Council chairman Joe Lonegan added: “When it’s a good day the park is full to capacity and many of the kids have perfected some wonderful skateboarding tricks over the last few months.
“Areas like Ravenshead are crying out for facilities like this and we are very grateful to the county council and parish council.”
