MP concerned by Cuckney Hill camera action plan

MANSFIELD MP Sir Alan Meale has told the council to stop ‘pussy-footing around’ as they investigate speed cameras on Cuckney Hill.

Nine weeks ago, Chad launched a campaign to improve road safety between Church Warsop and Cuckney after Luke Winter became the sixth person to be killed since 2006.

A petition with 1,500 signatures was taken to County Hall and the appeal has been backed by Luke’s family and pregnant partner Keeley Nattriss.

Keeley’s father Tony was also killed on the same stretch of road in 2009.

Since the latest death, Nottinghamshire County Council have been ‘collating speed data’ before making a decision about installing cameras.

Sir Alan, who joined Chad editor Tracy Powell and county councillor John Allin in handing the petition over, is concerned the council is over-complicating the matter.

“It doesn’t take long to look at the number of deaths and accidents,” he said.

“There’s accidents near Church Warsop cemetery every week.

“The council doesn’t seem to be getting to grips with the scale of the problem.

“Austerity can’t be used as an excuse because its funded by central government.

“They need to stop pussy-footing around.”

Suzanne Heydon, group manager for highway safety, said: “The speed data is currently being collated following which it will be processed and analysed.

“This will enable us to make an informed decision for this section of the A60.”

In last week’s Chad we reported how police re-issued an appeal for witnesses to the crash which killed Luke Winter on Wednesday 15th August.

Luke’s family also issued a heartfelt appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

Police said the appeal has produced some ‘further lines of enquiry that are now being pursued’.
