MP backs Clipstone headstocks demolition campaign

Waiting for Video...

MP Mark Spencer has joined the growing list of people calling for the Clipstone Colliery Headstocks to be demolished.

The Newark and Sherwood MP arranged a tour of the crumbling relic on Friday afternoon, inviting representatives from English Heritage, landowners Welbeck Estate, councillors, fire and police.

A meeting between the parties, and an independent consultant who is preparing a report on the site, then took place at the Coal Authority on Mansfield’s Lichfield Lane.

Mr Spencer said: “It feels as though everybody is coming to the same conclusion, with perhaps the exception of English Heritage, but I hope there’s a realism to what can be achieved.

“It’s difficult not to be awestruck when you stand next to the headstocks and I can understand why some people say they need protecting, but I can’t see how we can fund that, and whether it’s worth protecting for whatever purpose.

“If the community say they want them down then it’s my duty to represent them.”

An application is due be submitted by Welbeck Estate to demolish the Grade-II listed headstocks.

The tallest of their kind in Europe had stood redundant since the pit closed in April 2003.

But they have since become a magnet for vandals and calls continue to grow to finally pull them down to make way for development.
